Central Venous Pressure (CVP) Line set
Indications of central venous pressure Line set;
  • monitor central venous pressure in critically ill patients;
  • rapid administration of intravenous fluids;
  • administration of drugs, such as Long-term intravenous antibiotic therapy and cytotoxic drugs;
  • Long-term administration of parenteral nutrition;
  • To aid in the diagnosis of cardiac failure;
  • To monitor postoperative patients.
  • Dialysis
  • Frequent blood draws

Contra-Indications of central venous pressure Line insertion;
  • Uncooperative patient
  • Uncorrected bleeding diathesis
  • Skin infection over the puncture site
  • Distortion of anatomic landmarks from any reason
  • Pneumothorax or hemothorax on the contralateral side
How to Insert CVP Line Set; 
(Subclavian Venipuncture, Infraclavicular Approach - Step by step)
  1. informed consent.
  2. Place the patient in a Trendelenberg position (15 to 30 degrees head down)
  3. Disinfection of the skin.
  4. Identification of the local vein (Subclavian vein is located just deep to the middle third of the clavical, and runs parallel to it. The subclavian artery is superior and posterior to the vein.)
  5. Insertion of hollow needle through the skin until blood is aspirated (see the color of the blood to differentiate arterial vs venous blood).
  6. a blunt guidewire is passed through the needle, then the needle is removed.
  7. Finally, the central line itself is then passed over the guidewire, which is then removed.
  8. Chest X-ray is advised to confirm the placement.
